The Optical Sciences group studies the interaction of light and matter. Our current focus is on detection and sensing/imaging with an emphasis on the development of integrated photonics. We are part of Twente University's Department of Science and Technology and member of the MESA+ institute.
Particle manipulation by ultrasonic waves
The goal of this project the goal is move particles to a specific position within a liquid using high frequency acoustic waves. This is done by applying a standing pressure wave on particles in a flow. Due to the difference in compressibility, particles tend to align on the nodes and by moving the nodes of the standing waves, the particles can be moved towards the side of the flow channel. Since this technique can be used for a wide variety of particles, applications range from (microbiological) analysis of drinking water to filtering of contaminated water in petrochemical industries.
